Tuesday, March 3

Our last free day in Hanoi until after our tour!  We had to move rooms as I thought the tour had a room booked in another hotel, but not so.  So, we are in a deluxe room instead of a suite for tonight. It is quite fine.

This morning after breakfast we sorted our luggage.  We only want to take one small suitcase for the tour.  Then we went walking..... We wanted to go to the Arts and Cradts Market.  It is very close to our place. Other than the mickey of spiced rum for almost $6, there was not much there, so we continued walking. We decided we would like two turquoise silk lanterns for our bedroom.  We finally have figured out the price we should pay but can't find anywhere where they have two.  Then we decided to take a cyclo tour.  For $10 you get an hour's ride. It is a great way to take pictures.

Vietnamese bread for sale

Clothing store on wheels

A barber shop

The feather duster lady

The old way with the new way

Ladder store

About half way through our time my driver told Bruce that there was a good place to have a beer.  So Bruce told them to park.  So we went in and each had a glass of draft.  Total cost: $ 20 000 dong, a little more than $1.  That was the good part of the tour.

Vinyl records and birds in cages is the decor

Right beside this place was ...... The dog butchering stand.  Yep, this is where you buy the dogs To take home and cook.  We found out that right after TET it is unlucky to eat duck (because it smells), squid (because the black ink is bad luck), and dog (because of the emotions).  So, until the tenth or so these won't be eaten.  We also learned that this is their way not to be over run with stray dogs.  They don't spay or neuter them.  So after there is a litter born, they sell them.  The person who buys them will take care of them until they are full grown and then sell them to a butcher.  They only eat medium sized dogs.  The small are too expensive and the large ones the meat is too tough.

After our ride we went for lunch at a roof top place by the lake.

Then it was time to venture home for a rest.

Our alley

We moved rooms and played a couple games of Scrabble.  Then it was already 6:30, so time to find a bite to eat.  We venture down the main road and find this interesting looking place....

Amazing graffiti

We need to go to the second floor to find it...sure enough it is cute.  A small vase of real roses on each table, free water (first time we have had that), cutlery in a container on each table with napkins.

Bruce ordered the fried chicken with roast potatoes and spicy coleslaw.

I decided on the Greek salad and garlic toast.

I had to order the 'Dead by Chocolate' cupcake....
Dead by chocolate cupcake - excellent!
There is a good chance we will be returning to this place.

We get picked up at 8:00 in the morning, so will be an early one!
