Happy New Year

After a west-east breakfast (bananas, watermelon, 2 little oranges, yogurt with coconut, pineapple, cashews, and raisins, chicken fried rice, mixed veggies, roast pork in peppercorn sauce, watermelon juice, and coffee we went to the room to get caught up on my blog and start sorting as we have only one night left in Saigon.

We decided to go to the park nearby that had flower displays for New Years.  The entrance was $20 000 dong each, a little over a dollar. There were stalls set up selling jewellery, honey products, and more.

The displays were amazing. Apricot blossom trees that are bonsai as well as many others.  Petrified wood sculptures, orchids.

One custom is to buy a new outfit and then go to one of the places that are displaying flowers and have a photo shoot.  Today was very busy.

A maple leaf bonsai!

In one part of the park there was a carnival complete with rides and games.

There must be about ten work out stations in the park and all of them were being used.  This would be great for a schoolyard.

We left the park and met a guy carrying young coconuts to sell.  He convinced Bruce to try to lift it.  Bruce said it was about 60 pounds.  He then proceeded to slice off the tops of two coconuts and hand them to us with straws.  Cost way too much- $250 000 dong should have been $100 000 dong.  I remember this happening in Hanoi... Happens too fast to stop it....

There was drums beating close by, so we followed the sound and came across the Dragon Dance.  I took a video clip but too many people to get a good photo.

We continued to a cafe and ordered Vietnamese coffee - condensed milk in a glass, with strong coffee dripping into the glass. When it finishes dripping stir it well and then pour it over a glass filled with ice cubes.  Yum

While we were sitting there a teacher from Vancouver, that we met on our city tour, strolled in. He joined us and we visited for an hour or so.  He is an international teacher.  He took this year off and has offers in China and Singapore for next year.  He was a principal, teaches French, and is a life coach.

We continued walking towards our hotel and stopped at a nearby hotel with a nice area outside.  We ordered beers and I ordered bruschetta and Bruce ordered chicken wings.

We also bought another bottle of wine like we had last night, it was $2 more, but, oh well.
After we walked home for a cool down and rest.

Tonight we left the camera at home and walked to the backpack area to our fav people watching corner Allez Boo.  We went upstairs to the open air part.  Jugs of drinks were 2 for 1.  So we ordered a couple of jugs of Cuba libras.  Cost $16 ... But pretty weak drinks.  We had pineapple shrimp fried rice, mixed spicy veggies, and pork ribs.

Traffic is crazy at night, motorcycles on the sidewalk and three or four deep on the road.  We are home and tomorrow we will fly to Nha Trang. Here is a pic of our hotel bar and lobby ceiling... Remind you of Vegas?
