Tuesday, Feb. 17

Today is the last day of our tour.  So, we packed up our bags as we are moving to another hotel. I had decided that we would stay in two different ones- they are both three star.  The first one was booked as part of the tour.  It was fine and in a good location.

Last night as we walked around we found the one we were moving to. It is about two blocks from the first one.  The room they put us in had no view.... We are here for three nights so Bruce asked to change seeing it said we would have panoramic city view.  We ended up paying $10 more a night but having a larger room with a great view.  Well worth it!

Back to the tour.....
We were waiting on the tour bus as we picked up others.  Who should we see? Yep, the family that Bruce had a run in with yesterday.

The speed limit in Vietnam is 60 km/he so even though we didn't need to go that far it still took over an hour.  We stopped at a lacquer ware factory for a break.  We then contined onto the tunnels.
We saw a movie in the bus that explained the Vietnam War from the Vietnamese point of view.

When we arrived we walked through the jungle... And after 40 years the jungle which was totally flattened is looking back to normal.

Note the sandals.  They were made out of tires and they put the straps on backwards so their footprints looked like they were walking in the opposite direction.

As we walked we saw the hiding places the Vietnamese had dug out.... 1 meter across and 3 meters down.  So, if someone was coming they could hide.

After they kept digging and connecting the holes until they had three layers (top for fighting, second for living, and third for escaping) in total 250 km and all dug by hand.  Incredible!

We also saw all the torture boobie traps they had......

Then after we visited the shooting range where Bruce fired the most powerful rifle M16 we headed to the tunnels.

They have made the tunnels higher (they are now 1.4 meters high).  Every 20 meters there is a way out- we made it through 40 meters....and then Our backs were starting to hurt.  Then we went in again at the 'hospital' and I did 20 more meters and Bruce did 30 meters.

They used the bombs to make all kinds of things

After that we went to the movie room and our guide explained the map of where everyone was located as well as explained the tunnel system.

Then it was time to return to Saigon.  We got lunch included with our tour so off we went along with an American girl to a restaurant.  We had a good visit....and the travel agency called a taxi for us.  We went back to our hotel and picked up our bags and then he drove us to our new hotel.

Once we were settled Bruce decided to head to his fav massage place for a 90 min massage.  He decided he would get one every second day.  It cost him $350 000 dong, a
Bit over $20 for a Thai/Vietnamese combination.

After Bruce got home we went to see if we could find the place that makes bathing suits. We found it but it was closed.  We walked around and found cute sparkly flip flops for $6.  Then found a fabric store and found awesome fabric 2 meters for $8. We will be going back there tomorrow.

We walked back to the backpacker area and had dinner at Allez Boo.  I had a Hawaiian pizza and Bruce had spring rolls and shrimp fried rice.  We found a little boy to eat the piece of pizza I had left over.

Then we walked home through the horrendous traffic.  During the day there is less traffic than usual but at night everyone is in our area checking out the flower garden and buying them in the park.  Our guide said that they will pay $200-$300 Canadian for a tree for New Years even though they have not much $$.
